A Case Study of Major Disease Distributions and Patterns of Depression of The Elderly Inpatients of Geriatric Hospital

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to contribute in the improvement of long-term institutional medical care service to improve the health status and life quality of the aged in the aging society by surveying the distribution of major diseases and by identifying the risks factors of depression in patients hospitalized in the geriatric hospital. The study was carried out to the patients discharged from a 80-bed geriatric hospital located in Busan area from January to December 2005 and the DB on their discharge summary and care charge bills was used. The subjects of actual analysis consisted of 60 years or older 148 patients and the case that same person was discharged after re-admission with the same disease was removed from the subject of the study. In the major diseases, cerebral infarction and essential hypertension showed the highest levels, respectively. 11.5% was diagnosed as depression and 18.9% was prescribed with drug(s) with no diagnosis as depression; the elderly patients expected to have depression were expected to reach 30.4%. The variable significantly influencing on the general properties and the number of disease was the period of hospitalization (p=0.025) and the number of disease(p=0.05); in terms of the level of risk on the occurrence of depression, aged patients hospitalized for 60 or more days showed app, 2.4 times of the risk compared to the patients hospitalized for less than 60 days, and aged patients suffered from 4 or more diseases showed app. 3.3 times of the risk compared to the patients suffered from less than or equal to 3 diseases. As the result of survey, it was found that the depression in the aged is followed by the depression in psychological and emotional aspect caused by long-term hospitalization. It was indicated in the study that programs should be developed for appropriate management of depression and treatment of the aged
